Bibliophiles are likely to be increasingly depressed these days, thanks to the rise of ebooks and the continuing demise of bookstores. D. Young's documentary The Booksellers, receiving its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, should provide something of a balm to those beleaguered souls. Providing a behind-the-scenes look at the world of rare book dealers but also digressing into topics revolving around the printed word in general, the film will be enjoyed by anyone who's ever happily spent hours wandering through bookstores with no specific goal in mind. "The world is divided between people who collect things, and people who don't know what the hell these people are doing collecting things. observes one of the doc's subjects. Needless to say, the film very much concentrates on the former, especially those who attend the annual Antiquarian Book Fair at New York City's Park Avenue Armory, a mecca for rare book collectors. Ironically, as if to underscore the archaic products being exhibited, the armory is a virtual antique itself, dating back to the late 19th century and featuring a giant clock that no longer works. Among the dealers who exhibit there are Dave Bergman, who specializes in giant-sized books and whose apartment is packed to the gills with his inventory. "Every time I buy another book, I have to rearrange the entire place. he says sardonically. We learn that in the 1950s there were 358 bookstores in New York City and that now there are only 79 remaining (it's actually surprising there are still that many. The doc fascinatingly delves into the history of book collecting, spotlighting such pioneering figures as legendary British dealer A. S. Rosenbach, whose nickname was "The Napoleon of Books. and researchers Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine B. Stern, who uncovered Louisa May Alcott's pseudonym of A. M. Bernard, which the author of Little Women used when writing pulp romance fiction. Author Fran Lebowitz offers plenty of amusing commentary throughout the film. "You know what they used to call independent bookstores? Bookstores. she jokes, adding, They were all independent. Novelist Susan Orlean weighs in as well, talking about having sold her archives to Columbia University and worrying that in the age of computers, researchers will no longer have the opportunity to explore writers' creative processes. Its never a surprise to learn that the Internet has upended a business, or an entire industry. But in the lovely and wistful documentary “ The Booksellers, ” we hear one telling illustration of how the online universe has revolutionized the world of vintage books, and its an object lesson so fraught with irony that its a little head-spinning. Imagine that it was, say, the early 90s, and you were a rare-book maven with an impassioned, if not obsessive-compulsive, desire to accumulate a complete collection of the works of Edith Wharton, all in first editions. (Since Edith Wharton happens to be my favorite writer, this example nabbed my attention. How would you do it? Youd go to vintage bookstores, attend auctions, work with a dealer. Youd gather your first editions one by one, over time, and the slow and steady hunt would be part of the pleasure. But in the world of online book selling, where everything is catalogued and digitized, its all potentially a lot simpler. You can still play treasure hunt if youd like, but all you really have to do is say, “Id like to own a first-edition copy of every book Edith Wharton ever wrote, ” and the computer does the searching for you, all at once. To gather this collection, all youd have to be ready to do is to put the total sum on your credit card. In a sense, thats exhilarating. In rare books, as in so many other things, the Internet can reduce the search for the Holy Grail to an instant click-and-score. But with the hunt made borderline irrelevant, youre no longer quite collecting; youre just buying. The thrill may not be gone, but its reduced. And for the vintage book-store owner — the professional bibliophile, the man or woman who knows theyre buying and selling not just old books but sacred artifacts — the impact of Internet commerce has been a slow-motion debacle. The web turns them, more and more, into not-so-necessary middlemen. Of course, what the Internet is also doing is accelerating, rather radically, the erosion of our collective passion for book culture. Its not as if its gone away! But when it comes to feeding the book business as a business, the number of people who spend time reading things between covers is in a rapid state of decline. So for the vintage-book believer, the value of a volume has actually gone up: as totem, as symbol, as artifact of beauty. Its slow fade from the culture only enhances its magic as an object. “The Booksellers” invites us to dote on the tactile mystery of old books — the elegance of the print, the pages that may be fragmenting, the colorful latticework bindings, the back-breaking size of certain old volumes, like the Gutenberg Bible (more or less the first book ever printed, dating back to the mid-1400s) or one giant book we see that contains intricate drawings of fish skeletons. D. W. Young, the director of “The Booksellers, ” is a veteran film editor who leads us into grand and cozy old bookstores like the mysterious museums they are. He roots the movie in New York City (with a few forays to London) since thats where the heart of American literary culture still resides, and he introduces us to a cast of characters who are captivating in their what-I-did-for-love devotion. They all have it; if they didnt, they wouldnt be in the business. Many of the stores go back to the 20s, when 4th Ave., known as book row in Manhattan, had close to 50 bookstores, most of them owned and operated, in the words of Fran Lebowitz, by “dusty Jewish men who would get irritated if you wanted to buy a book. ” That, says Lebowitz, is because theyd gone into the business mostly so they could sit around and read all day. Now theyre back in fashion, to the point that a first edition of “The Great Gatsby” without a dust jacket is currently worth about 5, 000, whereas with a torn and tattered jacket it would fetch 15, 000, and with a jacket in vintage condition it could go for 150, 000. At the Antiquarian Book Fair held each year at the Park Avenue Armory, we see an original edition of “Don Quixote, ” which is worth 20, 000, and learn that a first edition of the original James Bond novel, “Casino Royale, ” now goes for 150, 000. The comparison to the art market is there in a primal way, even if the book prices are lower (though we do see the auction at which Bill Gates, over the phone, purchased Leonardos Codex Hammer for 28 million) with the cost of a vintage book reflecting the ever-shifting values of the culture. “The Booksellers” finds room for tidbits of history, like a thumbnail sketch of the pioneering book maven A. S. Rosenbach, as well as a portrait of the seminal dealer-collectors Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine B. Stern, who had to fight to make their mark in a demimonde of tweedy men. (For years, they were scandalously denied membership in the Grolier Club. Rostenberg and Stern became legendary, uncovering Louisa May Alcotts hidden pseudonym as an author of pulp novels, and opening the doors for the contemporary women dealers we meet, like Rebecca Romney, who became a regular on “Pawn Stars, ” spreading the gospel of rare-book love with a rare crossover charisma. She emerges as the movies cockeyed optimist of bibliophilia. Theres a happy contradiction at the heart of antiquarian book culture. Un video precioso, me a gustado mucho y con ganas de visitar la Gomera. “The Whistlers” is the feature film that was awarded the Palme dOr on Saturday 18 th May during the 2019 Cannes Festival. The film starts with the words: “Welcome to La Gomera, the pearl of the Canary Islands”; and is an engaging and witty thriller that shows how its main character, a corrupt policeman called Cristi (played by Vlad Ivanov) arrives on La Gomera to learn the ancestral language of the island, the Gomeran whistle, in an attempt to get a gangster out of prison. To do this, the main actors had to carefully learn and practise the essentials of the whistle language, which would not have been possible without the help of the director of whistle teaching on the island, Kiko Correa, who taught the language to the actors: “We were working for two weeks before filming, for four to six hours a day, and on the recording itself, and their willingness and commitment were surprising. ” The company Fred. Olsen S. A. was a partner in the recording of the film in La Gomera and was present at the Festival as a guest of the producer Patricia Poienaru (ARSIA PRODUCTION) for the premiere in the Gran Theatre Lumière, where it was fascinating to see the unique landscapes of the island on the screen with the plot linked to the Gomeran whistle language. The Tourism Board of La Gomera´s Island Government was also involved with this production, both in selecting locations and coordinating the filming. This film is undoubtedly going to make the unique characteristics of La Gomera and its people known worldwide. C orneliu Porumboiu is the film-maker whose movies such as Police, Adjective (2009) gave festival audiences a taste for his brand of bone-dry black comedy satirising bureaucracy and corruption in post- Ceaușescu Romania. Now he has put together this very watchable, rather exciting noir suspense thriller that has playful echoes of Neil Jordans Mona Lisa and even Orson Welles The Lady from Shanghai. Veteran Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov is Cristi, a corrupt Bucharest cop who has become involved in the drug-money-laundering setup he has been investigating. Huge amounts of cash are hidden in mattresses for export; these find their way to the island of La Gomera in the Canaries, where the bad guys are headquartered. Cristi has discovered that his superiors (themselves hardly impervious to bribes) suspect him and have placed secret surveillance cameras in his apartment. He knows exactly where they are but must carry on as normal. The fateful day comes when the drug lords beautiful girlfriend, Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) comes to meet Cristi. To fool the cops, she pretends to be a high-class sex worker and has sex with him in front of the secret cameras. Photograph: Vlad Cioplea/Cannes film festival The most surreal aspect is that Cristi must be brought over to La Gomera to be schooled in the local (and quite genuine) tradition of silbo whistling – the art of communicating in a whistled version of Spanish. The mobsters use it as a code that the police cant crack. That whistling could well become a vital channel of communication between Cristi and the object of his unrequited love. Whistling also has other resonances that Porumboiu allows us to ponder. Cristi – and maybe his commanders – have ambiguous identities and loyalties. They could be whistleblowers of a sort, revealing the secrets of their masters (whether police officers or criminals) and they are also snitches, singing like canaries. (The advantage of Gomeras whistling is that it sounds like birdsong to the uninitiated. Porumboiu gives us a knotty, twisty, nifty plot thats quite involved but hangs together well, and theres an amusing juxtaposition of gloomy, rainy Bucharest and the sunny terrain of La Gomera. Un film de nota 4 Am văzut “La Gomera”, propunerea României pentru Oscar, la categoria “Cel mai bun film străin”. Este o producție care a beneficiat de sprijin masiv din partea mass-media, dar din punctul meu de vedere, efortul presei a fost doar o capcană pentru spectator. Și pe mine, ideea filmului m-a atras. Sinopsisul și trailerul îți stârnesc curiozitatea. Am zis că voi urmări un film romanesc care abordează și altceva în afară de mizeria, lipsa de educație și sărăcia cetățeanului de rând. Mi s-a părut ceva mai occidental. Așa a și vrut să fie. Dar a ieșit doar o tentativă. Filmul a început bine, foarte îndrăzneț chiar. O partidă de sex hardcore întâmpină spectatorii în primele 15 minute… Mi-au plăcut tehnica de filmare, luminile și coloana sonoră, adică detaliile. Starting with the story, the cast (Catrinel Marlon is magnificent) the scenery, smart humor and hidden little gems (references to various famous scenes in other movies) this film makes you think you're watching more of a Hollywood movie than a Romanian one, although, as a downside, I must say certain characters seem to be portrayed a bit simplistic.
The story is, to some extent, a typical police one, but the twist of using the whistling language from Gomera Island enriches the plot all around as it unfolds.
I really liked the movie and I would be happy if it sets the new trend in Romanian Cinema.

Pfeifen, so sollte man meinen, ist eigentlich kinderleicht und bedarf, wenn man erst einmal den Bogen raus hat, keiner großen Anstrengung. El Silbo aber, die (real existierende) Pfeifsprache der kanarischen Inseln, ist da schon ein wenig vertrackter. Das liegt nicht allein an der Technik der Tonerzeugung, bei der der angewinkelte Zeigefinger in einem schrägen Winkel in den Mund eingeführt werden muss, sondern auch an der Linguistik, die Vokale und Konsonanten in Tonhöhen übersetzt. Und weil die Pfeifsprache auch über größere Distanzen funktionieren soll, muss das Ganze auch noch sehr laut geschehen. Anfangs verzweifelt der extra zum Erlernen der Sprache nach La Gomera angereiste korrupte Polizist Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) an den vielen Fallstricken von El Silbo, doch das ist bei weitem nicht sein einziges Problem. Cristis Grund für das Erlernen der Sprache ist nicht etwa Interesse, sondern etwas anderes. Der Teilzeit-Gauner und Matratzenfabrikant Zsolt (Sabin Tambrea) wäscht Geld für die Drogenmafia und sitzt nun im Knast, weil er „verpfiffen“ wurde. Aber weil er den Verbleib von 30 Mio. Euro kennt, soll er aus dem Gefängnis befreit werden – eine Aktion, an der nicht nur die Drogengang, sondern auch seine überaus verführerische Freundin Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) ein großes Interesse hat. Hinzu kommen Cristis Kolleg*innen, allen voran seine Chefin Magda, von der man eigentlich auch die ganze Zeit nicht weiß, auf welcher Seite sie wirklich steht. Denn warum ist ihr Büro ebenso mit Wanzen und Kameras versehen wie Cristis Wohnung? Plottechnisch ist La Gomera ein waschechtes Noir-Derivat, das nicht nur über eine überaus verführerische Femme fatale, korrupte und verliebte Polizisten sowie charmante Gangster verfügt, sondern auch jede Menge Referenzen an Filme wie Psycho und Die Spur des Falken bereithält. Neu ist dabei vor allem der Einbau der Pfeifsprache, die für einige komische Momente sorgt, wenn Cristi etwa am Anfang seine liebe Mühe mit dem richtigen Ansatz der Finger im Mund und mit der benötigten Atemtechnik hat. Und noch etwas anderes unterscheidet La Gomera von seinen Vorbildern – obwohl man diesen Trick schon aus anderen Filmen kennt. La Gomera ist ein erstaunlich leichter Film – trotz seinen wilden Zeitsprüngen und der nicht-chronologischen Erzählweise. Dank seiner zahlreichen Referenzen auf Filmhistorisches und die deutlichen Vorbilder, derer sich Porumboiu angenommen hat, macht das Werk einfach Spaß. Es fordert den Zuschauer heraus, am Ball zu bleiben und all die kleinen Andeutungen und großen Verneigungen zu enträtseln. Und das Ende, bei dem ein Park in Singapur mittels Licht zum Walzertanz gebracht wird, ist eines von der Sorte „zu schön, um wahr zu sein“. Der rumänische Cristi kommt auf La Gomera an, wo er von Gilda, der Frau, die er liebt, schon erwartet wird. Schon am nächsten Tag beginnt er damit, die Pfeifsprache der Einheimischen zu lernen. Was niemand weiß: Cristi muss die Sprache erlernen, denn nur sie hilft ihm dabei, Zsolt bei seiner Flicht aus einem rumänischen Knast zu helfen. Zsolt ist der einzige, der um den Verbleib von 30 Mio. Euro weiß, die dem mexikanischen Gangster Paco gehören. Und wenn Cirsti das Geld nicht auftreibt, wird Paco sie alle töten.
