The film starts with the words: “Welcome to La Gomera, the pearl of the Canary Islands”; and is an engaging and witty thriller that shows how its main character, a corrupt policeman called Cristi (played by Vlad Ivanov) arrives on La Gomera to learn the ancestral language of the island, the Gomeran whistle, in an attempt to get a gangster out of prison. To do this, the main actors had to carefully learn and practise the essentials of the whistle language, which would not have been possible without the help of the director of whistle teaching on the island, Kiko Correa, who taught the language to the actors: “We were working for two weeks before filming, for four to six hours a day, and on the recording itself, and their willingness and commitment were surprising. ” The company Fred. Olsen S. A. was a partner in the recording of the film in La Gomera and was present at the Festival as a guest of the producer Patricia Poienaru (ARSIA PRODUCTION) for the premiere in the Gran Theatre Lumière, where it was fascinating to see the unique landscapes of the island on the screen with the plot linked to the Gomeran whistle language. Now he has put together this very watchable, rather exciting noir suspense thriller that has playful echoes of Neil Jordans Mona Lisa and even Orson Welles The Lady from Shanghai. Veteran Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov is Cristi, a corrupt Bucharest cop who has become involved in the drug-money-laundering setup he has been investigating. Huge amounts of cash are hidden in mattresses for export; these find their way to the island of La Gomera in the Canaries, where the bad guys are headquartered. Cristi has discovered that his superiors (themselves hardly impervious to bribes) suspect him and have placed secret surveillance cameras in his apartment. He knows exactly where they are but must carry on as normal. The fateful day comes when the drug lords beautiful girlfriend, Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) comes to meet Cristi. To fool the cops, she pretends to be a high-class sex worker and has sex with him in front of the secret cameras. The mobsters use it as a code that the police cant crack. That whistling could well become a vital channel of communication between Cristi and the object of his unrequited love. Whistling also has other resonances that Porumboiu allows us to ponder. Cristi – and maybe his commanders – have ambiguous identities and loyalties. They could be whistleblowers of a sort, revealing the secrets of their masters (whether police officers or criminals) and they are also snitches, singing like canaries. (The advantage of Gomeras whistling is that it sounds like birdsong to the uninitiated. Porumboiu gives us a knotty, twisty, nifty plot thats quite involved but hangs together well, and theres an amusing juxtaposition of gloomy, rainy Bucharest and the sunny terrain of La Gomera. Un film de nota 4 Am văzut “La Gomera”, propunerea României pentru Oscar, la categoria “Cel mai bun film străin”. Este o producție care a beneficiat de sprijin masiv din partea mass-media, dar din punctul meu de vedere, efortul presei a fost doar o capcană pentru spectator. Și pe mine, ideea filmului m-a atras. Sinopsisul și trailerul îți stârnesc curiozitatea. Am zis că voi urmări un film romanesc care abordează și altceva în afară de mizeria, lipsa de educație și sărăcia cetățeanului de rând. Mi s-a părut ceva mai occidental. Așa a și vrut să fie. Dar a ieșit doar o tentativă. Filmul a început bine, foarte îndrăzneț chiar. O partidă de sex hardcore întâmpină spectatorii în primele 15 minute… Mi-au plăcut tehnica de filmare, luminile și coloana sonoră, adică detaliile. Der Nationalpark befindet sich auf einer durchschnittlichen Höhe von 2000 m. Er ist der meistbesuchte Nationalpark in Spanien. In diesem vulkanischen Hochgebirge ist die Luft zum atmen zwar etwas dünner, aber dafür sehr klar. In der Caldera Las Canadas wachsen einige seltene Pflanzen wie Wildprets Natternkopf, den man nur hier findet. Highlight ist aber der Pico del Teide, der höchste Berg in Spanien und auf den Inseln des Atlantik. Dessen Gipfel in 3718 m Höhe kann man auch mit einer Seilbahn erreichen. Der Teide Nationalpark wurde 2007 zum Weltnaturerbe der UNESCO ernannt. Weiter geht es zur Masca-Schlucht im Nordwesten von Teneriffa, welche auf einer Wanderung mit einer atemberaubenden Landschaft beeindruckt. Die Schlucht ist benannt nach dem Bergdorf Masca im Teno-Gebirge. Das Dorf befindet sich am oberen Ende der Schlucht. Von hier sind es 8 km und 800 Höhenmeter bis zur Küste. Die Tour endet in der Masca-Bucht am Atlantik. Die letzte Tour führt zur Nachbarinsel La Gomera. Die zweitkleinste Insel der Kanaren verzaubert mit einer einzigartigen Landschaft aus Lorbeerwäldern und immergrünen Farnen, die an vergangene Zeiten erinnern. Der Lorbeerwald befindet sich im Garajonay Nationalpark in der Mitte der Insel. Le siffleur. Les siffleurs corneliu porumboiu. Straight off, this movie is totally different to what you may be used when thinking about Romanian movies. Starting with the story, the cast (Catrinel Marlon is magnificent) the scenery, smart humor and hidden little gems (references to various famous scenes in other movies) this film makes you think you're watching more of a Hollywood movie than a Romanian one, although, as a downside, I must say certain characters seem to be portrayed a bit simplistic.
The story is, to some extent, a typical police one, but the twist of using the whistling language from Gomera Island enriches the plot all around as it unfolds.
I really liked the movie and I would be happy if it sets the new trend in Romanian Cinema.

Festivalkritik Handlung Eine Filmkritik von Joachim Kurz Das Leben, ein Pfeifen! Pfeifen, so sollte man meinen, ist eigentlich kinderleicht und bedarf, wenn man erst einmal den Bogen raus hat, keiner großen Anstrengung. El Silbo aber, die (real existierende) Pfeifsprache der kanarischen Inseln, ist da schon ein wenig vertrackter. Das liegt nicht allein an der Technik der Tonerzeugung, bei der der angewinkelte Zeigefinger in einem schrägen Winkel in den Mund eingeführt werden muss, sondern auch an der Linguistik, die Vokale und Konsonanten in Tonhöhen übersetzt. Und weil die Pfeifsprache auch über größere Distanzen funktionieren soll, muss das Ganze auch noch sehr laut geschehen. Anfangs verzweifelt der extra zum Erlernen der Sprache nach La Gomera angereiste korrupte Polizist Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) an den vielen Fallstricken von El Silbo, doch das ist bei weitem nicht sein einziges Problem. Cristis Grund für das Erlernen der Sprache ist nicht etwa Interesse, sondern etwas anderes. Der Teilzeit-Gauner und Matratzenfabrikant Zsolt (Sabin Tambrea) wäscht Geld für die Drogenmafia und sitzt nun im Knast, weil er „verpfiffen“ wurde. Aber weil er den Verbleib von 30 Mio. Euro kennt, soll er aus dem Gefängnis befreit werden – eine Aktion, an der nicht nur die Drogengang, sondern auch seine überaus verführerische Freundin Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) ein großes Interesse hat. Hinzu kommen Cristis Kolleg*innen, allen voran seine Chefin Magda, von der man eigentlich auch die ganze Zeit nicht weiß, auf welcher Seite sie wirklich steht. Denn warum ist ihr Büro ebenso mit Wanzen und Kameras versehen wie Cristis Wohnung? Plottechnisch ist La Gomera ein waschechtes Noir-Derivat, das nicht nur über eine überaus verführerische Femme fatale, korrupte und verliebte Polizisten sowie charmante Gangster verfügt, sondern auch jede Menge Referenzen an Filme wie Psycho und Die Spur des Falken bereithält. Neu ist dabei vor allem der Einbau der Pfeifsprache, die für einige komische Momente sorgt, wenn Cristi etwa am Anfang seine liebe Mühe mit dem richtigen Ansatz der Finger im Mund und mit der benötigten Atemtechnik hat. Und noch etwas anderes unterscheidet La Gomera von seinen Vorbildern – obwohl man diesen Trick schon aus anderen Filmen kennt. Mittels neonfarbener Tafeln hat Regisseur Corneliu Porumboiu La Gomera in Kapitel eingeteilt, die jeweils den Namen eines Akteurs tragen und diesen im Folgenden ins Geschehen einführen. Angesichts der Noir-typischen Unübersichtlichkeit des Plots wirkt das schon fast wie eine kleine Handreichung an das Publikum und hilft zweifellos gewaltig bei der Orientierung, wer denn jetzt schon wieder mit wem koaliert. La Gomera ist ein erstaunlich leichter Film – trotz seinen wilden Zeitsprüngen und der nicht-chronologischen Erzählweise. Dank seiner zahlreichen Referenzen auf Filmhistorisches und die deutlichen Vorbilder, derer sich Porumboiu angenommen hat, macht das Werk einfach Spaß. Es fordert den Zuschauer heraus, am Ball zu bleiben und all die kleinen Andeutungen und großen Verneigungen zu enträtseln. Und das Ende, bei dem ein Park in Singapur mittels Licht zum Walzertanz gebracht wird, ist eines von der Sorte „zu schön, um wahr zu sein“. Der rumänische Cristi kommt auf La Gomera an, wo er von Gilda, der Frau, die er liebt, schon erwartet wird. Schon am nächsten Tag beginnt er damit, die Pfeifsprache der Einheimischen zu lernen. Was niemand weiß: Cristi muss die Sprache erlernen, denn nur sie hilft ihm dabei, Zsolt bei seiner Flicht aus einem rumänischen Knast zu helfen. Zsolt ist der einzige, der um den Verbleib von 30 Mio. Euro weiß, die dem mexikanischen Gangster Paco gehören. Und wenn Cirsti das Geld nicht auftreibt, wird Paco sie alle töten.
